Reggae Music Jm

The word "reggae" was coined around 1960 in Jamaica to identify a "ragged" style of dance music, that still had its roots in New Orleans rhythm'n'blues. However, reggae soon acquired the lament-like style of chanting and emphasized the syncopated beat. It also made explicit the relationship with the underworld of the "Rastafarians" (adepts of a millenary African faith, revived Marcus Garvey who advocated a mass emigration back to Africa), both in the lyrics and in the appropriation of the African nyah-bingi drumming style (a style that mimicks the heartbeat with its pattern of "thump-thump, pause, thump-thump"). Compared with rock music, reggae music basically inverted the role of bass and guitar: the former was the lead, the latter beat the typical hiccupping pattern. The paradox of reggae, of course, is that this music "unique to Jamaica" is actually not Jamaican at all, having its foundations in the USA and Africa.
An independent label, Island, distributed Jamaican records in the UK throughout the 1960s, but reggae became popular in the UK only when Prince Buster's Al Capone (1967) started a brief "dance craze". Jamaican music was very much a ghetto phenomenon, associated with gang-style violence, but Jimmy Cliff's Wonderful World Beautiful People (1969) wed reggae with the "peace and love" philosophy of the hippies, an association that would not die away. In the USA, Neil Diamond's Red Red Wine (1967) was the first reggae hit by a pop musician. Shortly afterwards, Johnny Nash's Hold Me Tight (1968) propelled reggae onto the charts. Do The Reggay (1968) by Toots (Hibbert) And The Maytals was the record that gave the music its name. Fredrick Toots Hibbert's vocal style was actually closer to gospel, as proved by their other hits (54-46, 1967; Monkey Man, 1969; Pressure Drop, 1970).
A little noticed event would have far-reaching consequences: in 1967, the Jamaican disc-jockey Rudolph "Ruddy" Redwood had begun recording instrumental versions of reggae hits. The success of his dance club was entirely due to that idea. Duke Reid, who was now the owner of the Trojan label, was the first one to capitalize on the idea: he began releasing singles with two sides: the original song and, on the back, the instrumental remix. This phenomenon elevated the status of dozens of recording engineers.
Reggae music was mainly popularized by Bob Marley (1), first as the co-leader of the Wailers, the band that promoted the image of the urban guerrilla with Rude Boy (1966) and that cut the first album of reggae music, Best Of The Wailers (1970); and later as the political and religious (rasta) guru of the movement, a stance that would transform him into a star, particularly after his conversion to pop-soul melody with ballads such as Stir It Up (1972), I Shot The Sheriff (1973) and No Woman No Cry (1974).
Among the reggae vocal groups, the Abyssinians' Satta Massa Gana (1971) is representative of the mood of the era.
In 1972 reggae became a staple of western radio stations thanks to the film The Harder
They Come.

O.K. i got it ,you see it took me really long to figure out what you are saying, thats one of the reason why i like this forum it allows us to share different views and opinions. I said this to say that, did you know that us jamaican think tank is very shallow, do you really think we are smart as we act is'nt this what bob talk about when he said emancipate yourself from mental slavery this is when you cant use words understand this their is no such thing as goat soup its manish water or you cant count 1 3 4 5 7 8 its 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 i really dont like this even though i am a ja.these stupid djs we have in ja.are turning alot of people inside out and it really dont make sense or sound good.Jamaicans need to start thinking for ourselves and stop allowing people to think for us thats why we are behind in everything just dont make sense.i understand we always want to stand out but this is becoming like the man who climbs the tree to cut a limb off and stand on it while he chop.

i understand what ur sayin bt ill hav to defend the djs abit. u c im a young man growing up and i have many questions sum i keep to myself bcuz of sum of what u just said bt we are all our own persons. the djs may not be trying to save the world bt its not entirely their fault. danchehall is entertainment just like the movies r whatever. many things the djs say r a reflection of what normal people say nd do in everyday life. they say this to get a forward and make money for the most part. it is up to us if we wanna make them tell us what to do though what they say can be viewed as exergerated reality of a part of society's mindset. i listen proudly to dancehall music especially the younger artists nd i have my own mind which means i dont always agree with what they say(im just speaking for me tho). those silly smart comments have always been around and its root is society which produces the djs, pastor, whatevers, ect. i dont think u shud blame djs for jamaica's messed up atmosphere bcuz dancehall is popular but i think there was an article in a news paper that showed that most jamaicans dont listen it and they say the majority has the power. there's also many other reasons which i cant think of now and dont wanna mke this comment any longer than it is . afro this is my opinion

You know I was watching a show the other day and the presenter made a valid remark. He said; "People believe what they see". I agree partially and I dont agree. I believe the people who believe what they see or heard simply because they see it or heard it are those who dont have a mind of their own. I believe that as a people we need to be strong willed. Dont just believe because we hear or see, but we should be able to analyse the situation look within ourselves and them decide if what we see or heard is what we believe in. It all boils down to morals and values. Lets look at some of the dance hall lyrics. We have gun lyrics, sex lyrics etc. Yes they are reality of what is happening, but as a persons who have certain morals implanted, I will not go and buy a gun and start killing people because they hurt my feelings. Now some people will, now who are those persons that will adhere to the gun lyrics? simply the ones who do not have a mind of their own. Those are the persons who live based on what the songs say, by what the soap operas say etc. and those are the ones who do not have morals. The Djs do their thing, the actors do their thing, but if you decide to live what they say, I say bad for you.. Its up to each individual to know what they stand for and choose their way of life. I am sure the DJs are not to be blamed for adults actions. I will blame then for actions of a teenager or a younger child who might be influenced by a song, I will blame the actors that made the violent movies also. and last but not least, I will blame the guardians that allow their minors to be expose to things that their mind is not ready for. Yuo see, we all have a responsibilty as a society and as individuals. there is no one man or group of people to blame but us. flower

Sweet, if you steal a car you are a robber or a crook if you knowingly buy the stolen car what are you.i believe that this generation is worse off mainly because of the djs.in jamaica and thats why i strongly call for a ministry to be opened in parliament to govern it. crime, school dropout, illiteracy and some of the issues facing that island will not be curb unlees this dancehall an dj thing is taken up in hand. reggae and dance hall is not a part of our roots reggae i believe was brought to and introduce in the 60s i think, so thats not foundation. And i am not using 1 stone to kill all the birds but i think the switch from our real reggae, started and was approve by capleton on the rasta side and ninja and cobra on the ball head side.if you dont like whats playing in your house turn the radio off if you dont like whats playing in the country shut it down.profanity is in our roots and they are trying to stop it wrong.Saying people believe what see is wrong what about the person who cant see.do they believe anything let me know
